The hill station is divided into Lower Dharamshala (Dharasala itself) and the Upper Dharashala (or McLeod Ganj).

It is a small but picturesque hill station, perched at an elevation of 1,927 m. From Shimla, the hill town stands at a distance of 77 km. Some of the most attracting features of this tourist destination include its colonial charm, quaint shops, beautiful orchards, cobbled paths, gabled-roof houses etc. The town was developed by the British during the British Raj in India.

It is popular among tourists as 'India's Switzerland'. Covered with dense Devdar forests, Khajjiar is situated at a distance of 27 km from Dalhousie.
